The intelligence services of United States believes that the country will suffer in the next two decades loss of political and economic power, according to a study by the National Intelligence Council (NIC) released on Thursday.
United States is still the most important power, but less dominant, says the center's five-year report, titled Global Trends 2025, which makes forecasting the medium and long term. The NIC envisages that by that time the country is only one of a number of important actors on the world stage because of rivalry from emerging countries such as India and China.
The report also warns of simmering conflicts over control of raw materials like oil and water.
The international system, as it was built after World War II, is barely recognizable in 2025, says the study. The reasons for this transformation is the rise of emerging countries, the globalization of the economy and the transfer of welfare and economic power from West to East.
The secret services also provide for decreasing the distance between the industrialized and developing nations. Instead of adapting to the West, countries like Brazil, Russia, China and India (the so-called BRIC) will have a lot of freedom to set own policy priorities.
Conflicts raw materials that could be solved thought resurface in light of new developments, they fear the intelligence services. In the worst case
